Zeer korte verhalen, ik ben er fan van. Daarom is het best wel stom dat ik me nooit eerder verdiept heb in schrijver A.L.Snijders, pseudoniem van Peter Cornelis Müller. Hij overleed op 83-jarige leeftijd op 7 juni 2021. A.L. Snijders was de bedenker van het literaire genre, het ‘zeer korte verhaal’ (ZKV).
Bij de term ‘het korte verhaal’ moet je denken aan een verhaal tussen de 2.000 en 15.000 woorden, laten we zeggen zo’n 4 tot 40 pagina’s. Wat A.L. Snijders bedacht is het ‘zeer korte verhaal’, nog korter dus. Hoe lang is dan precies een ZKV? Dat is onduidelijk. Een ZKV is meestal niet langer is dan een bladzijde, zo lees ik ergens op internet. Zeg maar 500 tot ongeveer 2.000 woorden is mijn interpretatie. Even ter vergelijking; dit stukkie tekst is 253 woorden.
Al met al vind ik zo’n ‘kort verhaal’ of zo’n ‘zeer kort verhaal’ dus helemaal nog niet zo kort.
Het kan altijd korter. En dan kom je terecht bij een écht kort verhaal. Niet langer dan zes woorden. Zes woorden verhalen (six word stories) zijn korte tekstjes van, ja, je raadt het al, zes woorden, die een compleet verhaal vertellen.
Tijdens het EK voetbal borrelde er een op in mijn hoofd:

Het is bijzonder dat een verhaal soms gevat kan worden in woorden die meer betekenen dan de woorden. Ik vind het fascinerend. Ernest Hemingway schreef ooit; ‘For sale: baby shoes. Never worn’. Sindsdien zijn de zes woorden verhalen een literair genre.
